General

Yes. When selecting a suitable adhesive tape, tests under real conditions are useful, especially for demanding carton surfaces or packaging processes. Müroll provides B2B customers with product samples for application tests.

Yes. As a manufacturer, Müroll can adapt adhesive tapes to customer requirements in terms of various parameters. Depending on the product, these include, for example, dimensions, colours, printing, backing material and adhesive system. Technical feasibility and minimum quantities are checked for each application.

Yes. In addition to finished rolls, Müroll also offers jumbo and log rolls for industrial converters and processors. Depending on the product, different backing materials, adhesive systems and dimensions are available. The available specifications are agreed on an individual basis.

The right adhesive tape depends on the substrate, package weight, temperature, storage period, transport conditions and type of processing. Requirements regarding sustainability, printing or machine processing can also play a role. Müroll supports B2B customers in their selection and can provide samples for tests under real conditions.

Adhesion describes how strongly an adhesive tape sticks to a defined surface. In technical data sheets, it is often stated as adhesion to steel in N/cm. This laboratory value allows products to be compared, but does not reflect every real packaging surface. For demanding applications, an additional test on the carton actually used is therefore advisable.

Shear strength describes the resistance of an adhesive bond to forces acting parallel to the bonded surface. High shear strength is important, for example, when carton flaps are under constant tension or when heavy packages need to stay securely closed.

Adhesion and shear strength describe different properties of an adhesive bond. Adhesion describes how well the adhesive tape sticks to a surface, while shear strength describes its resistance to loads acting parallel to the bonded surface. Both properties can be relevant for reliable carton sealing.

Natural rubber, hot melt and acrylic adhesives have different properties. Natural rubber offers very good initial tack and is suitable for numerous demanding packaging applications. Hot melt is characterised by high initial tack and cost-effective processing. Acrylic offers, among other things, good ageing and UV resistance. Which system is best depends on the application, surface, temperature and storage period.

At its production site in Frastanz, Müroll has the three key coating technologies: natural rubber/solvent, synthetic rubber/hot melt and acrylic.

This allows different backing materials and applications to be combined with the most suitable adhesive system in each case.

PVC

Yes. PVC packaging tape can be individually printed, for example with a logo, brand name, warnings or other information. In addition to sealing cartons, the adhesive tape then also performs a communication and labelling function.

That depends on the PVC film used. The rigid PVC films used by Müroll are designed for high tear strength and tear propagation resistance and are therefore not comparable to plasticised PVC tapes specifically designed to be torn by hand.

PVC tape should be stored in a dry, clean place, protected from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures.

PVC adhesive tapes stand out for their high tear resistance, good adhesion and high load capacity. Another advantage is their even and quiet unwinding. Depending on the version, PVC adhesive tapes can also be printed and are available in different colours.

With through-coloured PVC adhesive tape, the colour is not just a surface print on the tape. The PVC film itself is coloured. This creates an even, high-quality colour effect.

PVC adhesive tape is mainly used for sealing cartons, but also for bundling, marking, masking and technical applications. Depending on the version, it is suitable for medium-weight to very heavy packages and for applications in industry, logistics and production.

The main difference lies in the backing material: PVC adhesive tape uses a PVC film, while OPP adhesive tape uses an oriented polypropylene film. PVC adhesive tapes are characterised in particular by high tear resistance and quiet, even unwinding. OPP adhesive tapes are versatile and cost-effective solutions for many packaging processes.

Rigid PVC and soft PVC differ above all in their film properties and areas of application. For its classic PVC packaging tapes, Müroll uses a smooth, rigid PVC film designed for high tear strength and tear propagation resistance. Soft PVC, by contrast, is often used for other technical applications.

OPP

OPP tape should be stored in a dry, clean place, protected from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures.

OPP tape is a cost-effective and versatile solution for carton sealing. Depending on the adhesive system and version, it offers high initial tack, good shear strength or good resistance to ageing. This allows OPP tape to be adapted to a wide range of packaging processes.

OPP stands for oriented polypropylene. Orientation gives the polypropylene film properties that make it suitable as a backing material for packaging tapes. OPP film is therefore widely used for manual and machine carton sealing tapes.

The three adhesive systems differ in their adhesion and ageing behaviour. Hot melt offers high initial tack, natural rubber very good adhesion for demanding packaging applications and acrylic good resistance to ageing and UV. Müroll can work with all three adhesive technologies.

Müroll offers special OPP tapes for automated packaging processes. OPP 230 is Müroll's most widely used machine tape and is suitable for industrial carton sealing.

Thanks to its material properties and cost-effectiveness, OPP tape is very well suited to continuous packaging processes with high carton volumes. Specially designed machine rolls also allow longer run times and reduce roll changes.

Paper

Yes. For convenient and consistent application of gummed paper tape, special gummed tape dispensers are used that cut the tape to the required length and activate the adhesive with water. Müroll offers suitable solutions for application.

With appropriately designed paper tapes, the tape and carton can be sent to paper recycling together. This means the tape does not have to be treated as a separate packaging component. The actual recyclability depends on the packaging system as a whole.

High-quality paper tapes can achieve high adhesive strength and are suitable for numerous packaging applications. Whether a paper, PVC or OPP tape is the better solution, however, depends on the carton surface, weight, transport, storage and processing.

Paper tape can help reduce the share of plastic-based packaging materials and implement paper-based packaging concepts. Rather than relying on a blanket sustainability assessment, however, the backing material, adhesive, material usage, recyclability and the packaging as a whole should be considered.

Paper tape combines reliable carton sealing with a paper-based backing material. Cartons and suitable paper tape can be sent to paper recycling together. Paper is also easy to print and blends visually into paper-based packaging concepts.

Self-adhesive paper tape already has a pressure-sensitive adhesive layer and can be applied directly. Gummed paper tape, by contrast, is activated with water and then bonds firmly to the carton surface. Both systems are suitable for paper-based packaging solutions, but differ in application and sealing properties.

Masking tapes

Müroll Crepe 660 Automotive is suitable for both water-based and solvent-based paints. The tape also offers good paint adhesion and was specially developed for demanding spray painting work.

Standard masking tapes such as Müroll Crepe 600, 601 and 602 are designed for simple, short-term indoor work on smooth surfaces. Crepe 650 Profi-Standard additionally offers properties for professional painting work: it is impregnated, moisture-resistant, heat-resistant up to 60 °C for short periods and can be removed without residue for up to 5 days.

For simple, short-term indoor work, Crepe 600, 601 and 602 are suitable. Crepe 650 Profi-Standard is designed for professional painting work and clean paint edges, Crepe 655 Profi-Heat for applications up to 80 °C. Crepe 660 Automotive is the high-temperature solution for demanding spray painting work, while GOLDtape 695-Pro was developed for particularly precise paint edges and longer application times. Actual suitability should be tested under real application conditions.

Filament tapes

Filament tapes are used when conventional packaging tapes do not offer sufficient tensile strength or stability. Typical applications include bundling heavy products, palletising, reinforcing packaging and securing goods in transit. Müroll offers both longitudinally reinforced and cross-reinforced filament tapes.

Filament tape is a fibre-reinforced adhesive tape for applications involving high mechanical loads. The embedded fibres increase tensile strength in particular. Typical applications include bundling, reinforcing, securing heavy goods and demanding industrial packaging.

In longitudinally reinforced filament tape, the reinforcing fibres run mainly in the machine direction. In cross-reinforced filament tape, additional fibres also run across the direction of travel. As a result, the products differ in their mechanical stability and are suited to different loads.

Blue4est

Yes. Blue4est® thermal paper can be recycled via the waste paper cycle. As it does not require chemical colour developers, it is an alternative to conventional thermal papers. Disposal should comply with local recycling regulations.

Blue4est® is free from chemical colour developers such as BPA and BPS. The paper is approved for direct food contact and offers good resistance of the printed image to external influences. Thanks to its blue colour, it is also easy to distinguish from conventional thermal paper.

Blue4est® is a more environmentally friendly thermal paper with a characteristic blue colour. Unlike conventional thermal paper, Blue4est® does not use any chemical colour developers. The printed image is created by a special physical reaction of the paper layers when heat is applied.

Thermal rolls

Thermal rolls can be produced with different thermal coatings. In the EU, the use of bisphenol A (BPA) in thermal paper is restricted from a concentration of 0.02 per cent by weight. Whether a thermal roll also meets specific requirements such as being BPS-free depends on the respective paper grade.

The legibility of thermal prints depends on the paper grade, storage conditions and external influences. Heat, light, moisture and certain chemicals can alter the printed image. For documents with longer retention periods, suitable paper grades should be used.

Thermal rolls should be stored in a cool, dry place, protected from direct sunlight. High temperatures, moisture and contact with certain chemicals can impair the thermal coating and the legibility of the printed image. The recommended storage conditions depend on the paper grade used.

Thermal rolls are mainly used for till receipts, payment slips, receipts, tickets and other printed documents. Typical areas of use are retail, hospitality, service businesses, petrol stations and parking systems.

Thermal rolls consist of specially coated thermal paper that is printed by the application of heat. A thermal printer creates the printed image without additional ink or toner. Thermal rolls are used in till systems, payment terminals and various receipt and ticket printers, among other applications.

Thermal paper has a heat-sensitive coating on which a thermal print head creates a printed image. Plain paper, by contrast, requires a different printing method, such as inkjet or laser printing. Thermal paper therefore allows printing without additional ink or toner.

The right thermal roll depends on the technical specifications of the device in question. The key factors are roll width, roll diameter, core diameter and the orientation of the thermal coating. The device requirements should be checked before ordering.
